The map pack, the three businesses with a map that Google shows at the top of local searches, captures the majority of clicks and calls for contractors. It sits above the regular blue links, so getting in is the single highest-leverage thing a local business can do. Here is how.
What the map pack is and why it matters
When someone searches "electrician near me" or "roof repair [city]," Google shows a map with three business listings. For most local searches, those three get the lion's share of the clicks and phone calls. This is your target.
The signals that decide the top three
The pack is ranked on relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot change your distance, but you can dramatically improve relevance and prominence, and businesses often assume proximity is destiny when it is not. With strong signals you can rank across a much wider area than distance alone would suggest.
Step 1: Nail your Google Business Profile
Category is one of the strongest signals, so pick the most specific primary category, then add every relevant service. Complete every field: hours, service area, attributes, photos. A complete, active profile outranks a neglected one, even a bigger one. Full details in our profile checklist.
Step 2: Earn reviews, consistently
Review count, rating, and recency are all ranking factors. If a competitor has 300 recent reviews and you have 20, that gap shows up in the rankings. Ask every satisfied customer, make it a routine, and respond to each one.
Step 3: Build local relevance on your website
Google ranks pages, not just profiles. Dedicated service pages and city pages give it more to work with and reinforce your map pack ranking. This is why the profile and the website should be optimized together.
Step 4: Get citations and links
Consistent name, address, and phone across the web confirms you are legitimate; backlinks from relevant sites build prominence. Together they lift how high you can rank.
Step 5: Track your grid, not one ranking
Your ranking is different on every street corner. Grid tracking (for example with Local Falcon) measures your position across a grid of points in your service area, so you optimize for real coverage instead of one lucky pin. That is how you turn a red map green across your whole area.
