Google Local SEO Changes, and what they mean for your business

Google changes how local search works constantly, and most business owners only find out when their calls dry up. This is the running log we keep for our clients: the updates that actually moved local rankings, in plain English, with what each one means for you.

Mar 2026

March 2026 Core Update pushes AI Overviews into local

Google's March 2026 core update pushed AI Overviews deeper into local results, and industry tracking now puts roughly 46% of all searches as carrying local intent.

What it means for you: AI answers increasingly pull straight from your Google Business Profile and website. Thin or outdated profiles simply get skipped. Keep both detailed, accurate, and current so you are the source the AI quotes.

Discover Core Update rewards hyper-local expertise

The February 2026 Discover core update shifted the Discover feed toward hyper-local, in-depth expertise rather than broad, generic content.

What it means for you: Genuinely useful, locally specific content wins reach; thin filler loses it. This is exactly why we build real service and location pages instead of padding.

'Ask Maps' replaces the manual Q&A

Google began retiring the old 'ask a question' feature in favour of 'Ask Maps', where Gemini scans your profile, website, and reviews to answer users conversationally.

What it means for you: Your profile and site copy now feed AI answers directly. Every detail you publish, or leave out, shapes what Google tells a potential customer about you.

AI place summaries reward fresh profiles

Google Maps now generates AI summaries from your reviews, posts, and web content, and multiple trackers report visibility drops when a profile sits 30+ days with no new photos or updates.

What it means for you: A great review score is not enough if the profile is stale. Consistent posting, fresh photos, and a steady flow of reviews now directly protect your ranking.

Video verification is the new default

Video verification is now the default for new listings in most regions, a single continuous take showing your signage, interior, and a live management action.

What it means for you: New and reinstated profiles take longer to go live. Plan verification early so a new location is not invisible for weeks while it is reviewed.
Dec 2025

December 2025 Core Update leans on brand authority

Google's December 2025 core update leaned harder on real user engagement and brand authority for local queries.

What it means for you: Being a recognised, trusted name in your area matters more than ever. Reviews, local mentions, and repeat branded clicks all feed this signal.
Sep 2025

Google removes the num=100 parameter

In September 2025 Google removed the num=100 parameter, so rank-tracking tools can now only read the first 10 positions instead of up to 100.

What it means for you: Impression counts in your tools and Search Console shifted overnight. Do not panic at the apparent 'drop', it is a measurement change. Focus on the top 10, which is all that really converts anyway.
Aug 2025

August 2025 Spam Update

Rolling out from August 26 to September 21, 2025, this update targeted spammy tactics across search.

What it means for you: Cheap link schemes and thin, mass-produced pages became liabilities overnight. Clean, genuinely useful sites were rewarded, which is exactly how we build.
2025

Business Profile Q&A retirement begins

Late 2025 saw Google start phasing out the manual profile Q&A in favour of AI-generated answers.

What it means for you: The old tactic of seeding your own questions and answers is fading. The new lever is a complete, accurate profile and website that the AI can quote.
Dec 2021

The Vicinity Update (still matters)

Google's Vicinity update sharply reduced the ranking power of keyword-stuffed business names and put more weight on proximity to the searcher.

What it means for you: Stuffing keywords into your business name stopped working and now risks suspension. Real relevance and genuine proximity win, and that is still true today.
