How the Google Map Pack Works (and How to Get In)

By Abdullah Zahid · July 20, 2026 · 6 min read

What the map pack actually is

The map pack (or "local pack") is the block of three business listings, with a map, that Google shows at the top of local searches like "roofer near me" or "plumber in Dallas." For a home service business it is the single most valuable spot on the page: it sits above the regular blue links and captures the majority of clicks and calls.

The three signals that decide who ranks

Google ranks the map pack on three broad factors:

  • Relevance, how well your Google Business Profile and website match the search. Your primary category, services, and service-area pages all matter here.
  • Distance, how close you are to the searcher or the place in their query.
  • Prominence, how well known and trusted you are, driven by reviews, citations, backlinks, and overall SEO.

Why proximity is not destiny

Businesses often assume they cannot rank outside their immediate neighborhood. Not true. With strong prominence signals and dedicated location pages, you can show up across a much wider grid than distance alone would suggest. That is exactly what a good local SEO campaign builds.

How to get in, and stay in

Getting into the pack comes down to a handful of levers we pull for every client:

  • Fully optimize your Google Business Profile: correct primary category, every relevant service, complete attributes, and regular posts and photos.
  • Earn reviews consistently. Review count, rating, and even the words customers use are all signals, and the biggest trust factor for the person choosing who to call.
  • Build citations and authority. Consistent name, address, and phone across the web, plus real backlinks, tell Google you are legitimate and prominent.
  • Rank your website too. Our hybrid approach ranks your profile and your site at the same time, so you own more of the page.

How long it takes

Most businesses see movement within about three months, with stronger positions across six to twelve months depending on competition. One roofing client we took from #45 to #1 organically generated 660 leads over two years.
